Bringing back sense of community is what meetup is all about. What a powerful concept! Meetup brings people with shared interests together in the community … people that without use of the Internet to bring them together might never had the opportunity to meet and interact in person.

Yes, meetups are usually formed and managed via a website and the site is terrific … with all the bells and whistles to make these events happen easily. Their platform allows anyone who wants to have a meetup, for a small fee, to use their super duper web platform to organize like minded people into clubs, activities, meetings or events. Some meetups are free, some have a small fee associated with it, but the neat thing is you are never obligated to participate. You have the option to RSVP yes, no or maybe.

Imagine going to a restaurant, park, store, private residence or anywhere really, that is conducive to the type of meetup you are attending with almost total strangers! Within moments of joining together you feel a kind of kinship with these people that you have never met, but share a common interest. You might be living down the street from a total stranger who loves to walk on broken glass as much as you do, but without this whole meetup concept you would have never met each other! Pretty cool, concept, huh? Great for folks who work at home, stay at home Moms, or anyone who wants to “hookup” with others.

That is what meetup is all about. Our lives have become so hectic that unless we schedule a time for ourselves, sometimes let opportunities pass us by. Meetup is something you can actually put on your calendar just like your dentist appointment. The web platform even sends you an email to remind you of an upcoming meetup event!

The types of meetups available are staggering … from ladies that shake their booties "belly dancing" to mastermind business developers and everything in between. Pug people, crazy quilters, scuba diving divas, people that love to eat sushi Sunday afternoons … you name it and someone else likes to do it too. If you don’t find a meetup that tickles your fancy near you, put your ideas on the website and maybe someone will form one … maybe even you.

A lot of people agree! As of February 2009, Meetup claimed to have 4.7 million members, 46,315 groups, and 4,916 topics. It is becoming an obsession with many people and I must admit that I am astounded at the terrific people I have met attending events. In fact, I am turning into a meetup maniac!
